A perilymphatic fistula occurs when the membrane separating your middle and inner ears tears. Patients with this condition may notice a feeling of fullness in their ear, hearing loss and vertigo. A perilymphatic fistula can be caused by head or ear trauma, rapid changes in air pressure, frequent ear infections or exposure to loud noises.
Perilymphatic Fistula Symptoms
- Sudden hearing loss
- Hearing loss that comes and goes
- A feeling of fullness in the ear
- Dizziness, vertigo or motion sickness
- Nausea
- Memory loss
- Headaches
- Tinnitus, or ringing in your ears
Laughing, coughing or sneezing may exacerbate your symptoms. They may also worsen when lifting heavy items or when you are at changing altitudes.
Perilymphatic Fistula Treatment

- Bed rest: Often the first line of treatment, this may be recommended for several weeks to see if your symptoms alleviate.
- Blood patch injections: During this procedure, blood is injected into your middle ear to regenerate the damaged membrane.
- Surgery: Your eardrum is lifted, and tissue grafts are used to cover the damaged membrane between your middle and inner ear.
